What is Eco-socialism?
Supporting Socialist Policies Means Supporting Your Community
Eco-socialism is the belief that the economy (and society overall) should be democratically planned and organized to meet human needs while protecting the environment, instead of maximizing profit or only allowing those with money and resources (i.e., capital) to structure society.

Capitalism is not the same thing as commerce (see video explainer). People have always bought, sold, traded and started businesses. Commerce exists in every kind of economy. Capitalism is just one way of organizing an economy - one where profits and private ownership are the driving forces.
Eco-socialism offers a different approach. Instead of asking, "How do we maximize profit?" it asks, "How do we best meet people's needs while protecting the environment?" It entails:
- More worker-owned businesses, cooperatives (Co-Ops), public utilities, community land trusts, and public benefit corporations.
- Essential services like healthcare, housing, food, energy and water are treated as necessities and basic human rights - not opportunities to make profit.
- Ensuring markets and small businesses serve people, not the other way around.
